A nationwide system failure hit on Friday evening.

As reported by the BBC, problems began on Friday evening following a nationwide outage of the UK's electronic passport gates. The e-gates are in use at all major UK airports - including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Stansted - leading to significant delays across the country. A spokesperson from Gatwick Airport said the problems started between 19:00 and 20:00 local time on Friday night.

A Home Office spokesperson said the cause of the system outage was "too sensitive to say," adding that it was working closely with airports to minimize disruption. Additionally, the UK's Border Force will deploy additional staff to ensure more manned passport stations are occupied.
