The airport hopes to get 100% of its energy from the 16MW plant to be built on green belt land next to its runway, as it seeks to become carbon neutral by 2035

The airport unveiled huge plans last year to build a 16MW facility comprising almost 40,000 solar panels on green belt land next to its runway.

The project is now earmarked for approval by Newcastle City Council – though the fact that the development is within the green belt means it will also need sign off from the government before it can go ahead.
