Upgraded runway successfully completed at RAF Akrotiri

Lagan Construction International and their local JV partners Iacovou have handed over the runway to full operations at RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus on behalf of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO). The works commenced on this £46 million in the Summer of 2015 and has been completed whilst maintaining operational readiness at the most strategically important base that the RAF operate.

The project involved the placement of 54,000 m3 of concrete, 90,000 tons of asphalt and included the reconstruction of 144,00 m2 of PQC dispersals & Turnpads, construction of 225,000 m2 of new taxiway and overlay of the existing runway.

Works also included the installation of a new airfield ground lighting system, a new drainage network to entire scheme including 5 petrol interceptors and 4 emergency fuel storage tanks to cater for spillages and a new Runway Hydraulic Arrestor Gear Installation (RHAG).

Lagan Iacovou Project Director James Aikman commented.

“The success of this project has been based on a collaboration between the stakeholders which has safely delivered this challenging project. It is a first for the MOD involving undertaking a runway resurfacing in night possessions that is used for Fast jets. It is a testament to the expertise and culture of our teams that we have worked in collaboration with the key Stakeholders including DIO, RAF, Ramboll, our designer CH2 and our supply chain.”

Defence Infrastructure Organisation Chief Executive Graham Dalton said:

“I am delighted that the upgrade to the runway at RAF Akrotiri is complete. This is a crucial asset for Defence and this project has been a huge success. DIO has worked with our customers and contractors to successfully carry out this critical work while minimizing the impact on operations.”
