This will be the first-ever major upgrade since the international terminal opened in 1990.

According to Chief Executive Officer of Cairns Airport, Richard Barker, the redevelopment of the international terminal will be rolled out in stages to minimize passenger disruption. Staff from the contractors - Hutchinson Builders, will be on site from March onwards, and work is due to begin early in April.

With significant changes already planned for the first stage of redevelopment, and with that many intricate details involving glasswork and design work, the overhaul is expected to take about 14 months to complete and will generate up to 100 jobs during the construction phase.

The second stage will focus on enhancing passengers' arrival experience with new baggage belts and an expanded passenger movement area to increase the terminal's capacity. Then in the third and final stage, the departure areas will be overhauled with new layouts and improved seating spaces.

Unfortunately, any official artist's impressions of the three-stage redevelopment have yet to be found or provided at this time of writing, so the final look is entirely up to anyone's imagination.
