Dubai International Airport is one of the world's busiest airports, handling almost 90 million passengers yearly before COVID-19. However, with no space to expand north, east, south, or west, the airport has to get creative regarding ramping up capacity.
Speaking to Simple Flying late last year, the airport's CEO Paul Griffiths revealed there is potential to handle 25-30 million more passengers. After that, a move to the new Dubai World Central Airport is inevitable and a question of when, not if.
The future of Dubai's airport landscape lies with the Al Maktoum International Airport, also known as Dubai World Central.
Dubai International Airport would be closed down once Dubai World Central is fully operational due to the expense of operating two airports in close proximity.
