DIT: Launch of Call for Input on the UK’s future trade relationships with Canada and Mexico.
The UK Government is starting preparations for trade negotiations with Canada and Mexico to upgrade our existing trade deals. These negotiations are led by the Department for International Trade (DIT) with input from DfT on the transport aspects, including the following auxiliary air transport services:
- Aircraft repair and maintenance
- Airport operations
- Selling and marketing of air transport
- Ground handling
- Computer Reservation Systems
- Speciality air services
The UK signed Trade Continuity Agreements with both Canada and Mexico before the end of the Transition Period and committed to start negotiating new Free Trade Agreements later this year. We are seeking your input on which aspects of current trading arrangements with Canada and Mexico we should look to improve or amend in our new, more ambitious deals.
The Government is committed to negotiating new deals that are tailored to the needs of the whole of the UK and invite you to give your views via DIT’s Call for Input, which is open from 18 May to 12 July 2021. Please complete the Call for Input online

BAG Business Intelligence Document *Updated version available*
BAG’s Business Intelligence and Strategic Relationship Working Groups have been producing regular Business Intelligence Updates over the past year to try and collect as much intelligence as they can to gather on what is happening in the market, both now and how things change throughout the pandemic. The Board agreed to focus these discussions onto four topics:
- What’s happening at UK airports. We are hearing of capital plans being put back. When might some of those come back, in what form etc.
- What’s happening in the International markets, particularly in the priority markets we set for this year in discussion with DIT. Based on what we learn should we be resetting those priorities or focusing on other opportunities
Over the course of the last year we have been publishing quarterly Business Intelligence Updates which are released via the BAG website and shared with our membership. The latest May 2021 Business Intelligence Update can now be found on the BAG website together with all past editions. You can find the documents here.

BAG / DIT Philippines Design Delivery Model Workshop
On Monday 24 May 2021, BAG together with Department for International Trade (DIT) Philippines / British Embassy Manila coordinated a Design Delivery Model workshop to engage the Philippine market which included presentations from UK industry showcasing the breadth of UK expertise covering themes such as stakeholder management, concept design to delivery design, quality and product, balancing project risks and others.

BAG Review 2021
BAG launched their first online digital BAG Annual Review 2020 at the start of the year! Traditionally, BAG has produced a document showcasing activities over the course of the previous year which has been circulated at events and exhibitions. This year, we wanted to showcase BAG’s activities in a virtual and interactive way to highlight month by month what BAG has achieved, including key activities, webinars, Special Interest Groups and Regions, and how BAG has successfully engaged with its members throughout a challenging year.

BAG Annual Dinner 2021 Update- *Save the date*
We are delighted to announce that the date we have reserved for what would traditionally be the BAG Annual Dinner in September will this year be held as a live BAG Networking Reception on Wednesday 29 September 2021 at The Brewery London. As restrictions begin to lift and industry begins to recover, we wanted our main event of the year to be as inclusive as possible to all members and clients, and we have therefore chosen to host a Networking Reception rather than a classic sit-down black-tie event. Further details on the BAG 2021 Networking Reception will be made available in the coming months, but please save the date already now in your diaries!

Join the UK Pavilion at inter airport Europe 2021
The British Aviation Group will be hosting for the first time the UK Pavilion at inter airport europe on 9-12 November 2021 in a prominent area in Hall 6 adjacent to one of the doors leading to the external exhibition area. This will be the 23rd edition of inter airport europe, the world’s leading airport exhibition, which covers all areas of airport-related technology, equipment, and services, all in one place. As part of the TERMINAL segment, the show offers solutions and equipment for the construction and operation of terminal buildings, the architectural design, equipment, and planning stage of the airport. The DATA area covers airport IT systems, data management solutions as well as connected systems and IT processes to handle passengers, operations as well as air traffic. The RAMP segment covers ground handling, ground support equipment, runway constructions and installations.

BAG Virtual Get Together - Connected Places Catapult: Transitioning to Hydrogen and Electric Fuelled Aircrafts *Recording & Presentation Available*
BAG has been identified as one of the stakeholders of the Connected Places Catapult’s new project with DfT focusing on “Transitioning to Hydrogen and Electric Fuelled Aircraft”. This project looks at the challenge of bringing new and sustainable aviation fuels to airports, how this will affect the existing infrastructure, operational procedures, policies, procedures and equipment for new fuels, as well as battery power etc. The goal of the project is a detailed study, dedicated demonstrations and a Technology & Research Innovation Grant (TRIG) programme which will identify challenges to be overcome, identify solutions, and showcase new and existing UK innovations to problem owners and decision makers in order to stimulate investment and adoption within this space.
As a stakeholder we are reaching out to all relevant groups within BAG so we can update members on this new project as well as actively involve members accordingly. This webinar will provide an opportunity for all BAG members to learn more about this project before you will be able to engage in more detail via the BAG Special Interest Group May sessions.

BAG Virtual Get Together- Intelligent Pavement Infrastructure at Manchester Airport

Runways are the most valuable airport assets. This is particularly the case for single runway airports such as the majority of UK airports. They must be maintained in a safe and sustainable condition throughout their live to provide continuous operation. Premature failure can lead to unexpected repairs and subsequent traffic delays, negatively impacting on an airport’s costs and reputation. When Heathrow Airport closed for a few days due to heavy snow in 2010 it had a detrimental commercial impact, while Concorde’s tragic accident in 2003 - caused by runway Foreign Object Debris (FOD) damage - had a major effect on the entire aviation industry.
Transforming the maintenance of airport runways through innovative monitoring techniques and digital technology, the project plans and develops the implementation of an Intelligent Infrastructure System. To improve the safety and sustainability of the runway, installing smart sensors within pavements to remotely measure responses to aircraft loading in real-time is considered. The project incorporates a complete digital support system to improve asset management, efficiency and safety, while reducing whole life costs and building resilience. In the future, smart materials will be considered, such as self-healing asphalt and carbon-absorbing materials, to automatically trigger and perform repairs.
