Maintaining Temperature

Our client, Belfast City Airport is an International Airport, handling thousands of global visitors on a daily basis. 

Due to high footfall and continuous use of their doors, the airport was finding it very difficult to maintain temperature within the building. This temperature loss was affecting the overall thermal  comfort within the building thus creating associated problems for staff   discomfort, unhappy tenants and higher energy bills.

Enershield Solution

Following a detailed site survey, we proposed the fitment of two Enershield Microshield MCS-48 units over each doorway. These were designed and fitted with two auto-actuators, as a result, the units only come into operation when the doors are open.

Results

Following commissioning of the Enershield units, air temperature within a 1 metre range of the entrances was recorded using a fast reactive digital thermometer. By studying both doors, one with the air barrier activated and the other with the air barrier de-activated, a direct comparison of air barriereffectiveness could be made. As the unprotected door opened, there was a sudden thermal exchange and internal temperature fell rapidly to less than 10 degrees. In contrast, at the   protected doorway, the set point temperature was maintained at over 16 degrees with the door open. These results prove that the air barrier is creating a seal across the open doorway, separating the environments on either side and reducing the uncomfortable ingress of cold outside air.

In addition to the above, staff stationed around the entrances are enjoying a much important level of  comfort. Passengers are finding the terminal environment warmer and more inviting while the reduction in lost heat in resulting in reduced energy consumption and therefore reduced costs. The air barriers are also preventing the ingress of smoke, odours and other airborne contaminants and therefore improving the air quality and general cleanliness of the entrance areas.
