For Swedish Airport operator Swedavia, sustainability - both environmental and financial - is the main element that runs through its masterplans. Building on its main long-term masterplan, the organization has recently completed its Stockholm Arlanda Development Plan, which outlines the way forward for the next 15 years.

"This plan bridges the gap between current operations and the long-term perspective," says Ali Sadeghi, Director of Facilities and Systems at Swedavia. "The development steps in the plan are also linked to passenger volumes rather than specific years to maintain flexibility amid uncertain traffic growth forecasts."

The Arlanda plan prioritizes the most important projects, such as the new Pier G, and their financial viability, and indications the order in which measures should be taken. Like all development plans at Swedavia, it used the Swedish Transport Administration's (Trafikverkit) four-step principle for sustainable development. This development tool assesses various development alternatives, aiming to optimizer and reuse existing infrastructure rather than building new.
