In recent years, Munich Airport has adopted a modern, holistic approach to aviation planning, which brings together digitalization/automation, infrastructure and sustainability.

"In the past, aviation planning was carried out in silos," explains Martin Bertling [Head of Capacity, Simulation and Infrastructure for Aviation at Munich Airport]. "The focus was on infrastructure planning and aviation requirements, such as passenger types, aircraft size, etc, which resulted from traffic forecasts. There was no long-term planning for digitalization because the interactions between different systems in the terminal and air traffic control tower, for example, were limited. Sustainability was not really addressed at all."

"However, integrated and holistic planning of digitization, capacity and sustainability is common today and will continue to be so in the future. In general, a more process-driven approach is being taken by airports, and the various processes from landside to airside are becoming more and more interconnected."
