Like Swedavia, Heathrow's masterplan is focused on sustainable development. "In recent years, the focus has been on optimizing the infrastructure within the existing footprint of the airport and implementing our sustainability strategy," explains Gianluca Maestri, Senior Master planning manager at Heathrow Airport. "In a space-constrained airport such as Heathrow there is also always a challenge to balance multiple requirements."
Sustainability issues are now incorporated into aviation planning, notes Heathrow's Head of Carbon Strategy, Matt Prescott. "This includes flexibility for the possible deployment o segregated sustainable aviation fuel storage, and to accommodated liquid hydrogen storage and distribution for zero-carbon-emissions aircraft in the future."
