Lynchburg Regional Airport has been working on acquiring new flights to new airports. Still, its recent conversations with United stopped any flights to Washington Dulles International Airport in its tracks, after the Star Alliance carrier told them there is a lack of available gates at the US capital city's main airport.
The airport has hired an air service consultant, who has spent years at American Airlines as the Senior Manager of Network Planning, to develop new routes to and from the region. It has been made clear that Lynchburg Regional Airport (LYH) would need to secure a minimum revenue guarantee if the airport were to gain another service.
In an article published by the News & Advance, Lynchburg has claimed that United Airlines is unable to launch a direct service to the airport due to IAD [Washington Dulles] already being constrained by a lack of available gates that would hamper the chance of new services...
