London Stansted Airport achieved a historic milestone in 2025, marking its busiest year on record. Passenger numbers surpassed the 30 million mark for the first time ever.
In total, 2.26 million passengers passed through in December, representing a 1.6% increase compared to the same month in 2024.
Infrastructure and sustainability efforts also advanced significantly. In late 2025, the airport obtained crucial planning approval to raise its annual passenger cap to 51 million.
This decision, granted by Uttlesford District Council, supports long-term expansion without requiring a second runway or exceeding current flight limits.
It positions Stansted Airport to fully utilize its existing single runway while fostering sustainable growth over the coming decades. This potentially unlocks thousands of jobs and boosts the regional economy in the London-to-Cambridge innovation corridor.
Several major projects progressed during the year. A new domestic arrivals building opened, enhancing passenger flow.
A substantial investment program rolled out state-of-the-art security technology, enabling travelers to keep larger electronics and liquids in their carry-on bags without removal—streamlining the screening process.
