Shannon Airport has marked a key step in its sustainability and capacity plans with the official opening of Ireland’s first airfield-located solar PV farm, alongside a significant expansion of its European boarding gates.

The dual development, representing a combined investment of 6.6 million euros by The Shannon Airport Group, was officiated by Minister for Climate, Environment & Energy, and Minister for Transport, Darragh O’Brien TD. For aviation and tourism stakeholders, the project underlines how regional airports are starting to integrate energy transition measures directly into airfield infrastructure while also preparing for passenger growth.

At the heart of the investment is a 3.6 million euros, 1.2-megawatt solar PV farm installed on a 5.5-acre site within the airfield. Comprising over 2,700 bifacial solar panels, the system is expected to supply up to 20% of Shannon Airport’s annual electricity needs.
