Qatar reportedly plans to upgrade infrastructure at Doha’s Hamad International Airport to increase passenger capacity by 20 percent.

The goal is to maximise the use of existing assets before planning any costly expansion, the airport’s chief operating officer Hamad Al-Khater told Bloomberg.

He said the airport can accommodate 75 to 77 million passengers annually within its current footprint, citing it as a “primary goal”.

In March, the Doha airport terminal was expanded by 14 percent to cover 845,000 square metres, accommodating 65 million passengers following an expansion plan initiated in 2018.

At the same time, Badr Mohammed Al Meer, group CEO of Qatar Airways Group, said the airport expansion would back Qatar Airways’ growing network, improve operational efficiency and support economic diversification in line with Vision 2030.
