Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) reached its 90% completion milestone in June 2025, ahead of its scheduled autumn 2025 opening. The occasion also marks a decade since Christina Cassotis took over as CEO of the Allegheny County Airport Authority, which operates PIT, setting in motion the ambitious terminal redevelopment vision.

Originally designed as a hub for US Airways, the airport encountered severe challenges when the airline dismantled its Pittsburgh hub in 2004. At the time, 80% of passengers were connecting. Today, only 2% of traffic is connecting and 98% is origin-and-destination.

Cassotis says, “In the 10 years between when the hub collapsed and me getting there, the team at Pittsburgh was really just trying to stop loss. There wasn’t a lot of investment in travel or even in preventative maintenance. Funds had dried up.”

When opportunities to invest began to return in 2014/2015, designs for the terminal focused on overhauling its outdated approach to instead emblematize the local region through a design that was truly people-centered.
