The major investment of R14.5 billion will go toward modernizing the infrastructure of O.R. Tambo International Airport, South Africa’s busiest airport, in order to improve the overall passenger experience. This five-year CAPEX programme will increase operational reliability, modernize passenger facilities, and position the airport as a premier hub for tourism, both locally and internationally. These upgrades are destined to make long-lasting impacts on the tourism sector of South Africa, helping the country grow as a destination globally.
The ongoing metamorphosis of the airport will ensure that it continues to be competitive on the international scene and appeal to more tourists, businesspeople, and international airlines. With South Africa’s tourist industry recovering strongly, such infrastructure upgrades are necessary in sustaining smooth travel for its many visitors.
A key element of the R14.5 billion CAPEX programme is the renovation of high-traffic passenger areas, including refurbished escalators, new ergonomic seating, and improved wayfinding signage.
By modernizing essential facilities such as terminal walkways and boarding gates, O.R. Tambo International Airport is enhancing its tourism appeal and ensuring a more comfortable, efficient journey for tourists from the moment they step off the plane.
A major part of the upgrade includes a complete refurbishment of the airport’s ablution facilities, responding directly to passenger feedback. The first phase, which involves modernizing 90 individual toilets, will be completed by March 2026, followed by an additional 780 toilets in Phase 2 in 2026-2027...
