The most recent partnership between Heathrow Airport and operational consultancy Oxcal has developed a new approach for providing airbridges. In addition to traditional aircraft trials, the new method utilises purpose manufactured 'mock-up' fuselages to replicate the docking area of an aircraft. These mock-ups enable docking procedures to be simulated for the entire aircraft mix on a stand without the need for different types of aircraft to be physically present, ensuring that new airbridges are tested and optimised for everything from a B737 to an A380. Oxcal and Heathrow successfully applied this new approach as part of the Operational Readiness programme preceding the recent go-live of Heathrow's new Terminal 2.
