After a major air traffic control (ATC) outage last week, radar screens again went black in the early hours of the morning on Friday, May 9.
This outage occurred at 03:55, and it lasted around 90 seconds, according to a public statement made by the Federal Aviation Administration. Audio released to the public showed confused and concerned air traffic controllers telling a FedEx aircraft that their radar screens had gone fully dark. Those across the industry have been quick to express their concerns about this incident and to put pressure on the FAA to fix these issues.
The Federal Aviation Administration has been quick to respond to Simple Flying's request for comment regarding the matter. In a statement, the regulatory administration had the following words to share:
"There was a telecommunications outage that impacted communications and radar display at Philadelphia TRACON Area C, which guides aircraft in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport airspace. The outage occurred around 3:55 a.m. on Friday, May 9, and lasted approximately 90 seconds."
