Airports have a vital role to play in the decarbonization of aviation
As the aviation industry charts its course toward net zero, much of the attention tends to focus on cleaner fuels, new aircraft technologies and operational improvements. Yet one critical pillar of the transition risks being underestimated: the energy needs of airports.
Without a parallel transformation in how airports access, produce and consume energy, the sector’s decarbonization goals will not be met.
Energy is already a cornerstone of airport green transformation, and airports are drawing
attention to the growing need to access and produce renewable and low-carbon energy to power aircraft and ground technologies.
Considering future traffic growth, combined with the integration of advanced air mobility and the ongoing energy transition, airports are looking at a dramatically reshaped energy landscape.
To deliver the sustainable transition, airports will become even more energy-intensive systems with large-scale electrification of ground support equipment (GSE); increased need for cooling and heating due to the impacts of climate change; the adoption of green building standards; hydrogen-powered and electric aircraft; integration of digital and automated systems across airport facilities; and airside and landside e-mobility.
Airports cannot decarbonize without access to sufficient renewable, low-carbon energy that is affordable and reliable.
