Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD) facility’s two insulated membrane-clad hangars measure 300 feet long with a 300-foot clear span and 40-foot sidewalls, culminating in a center height of 100 feet. Each structure has five-panel, Megadoor vertical-lifting fabric doors from ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems, each with pivoting mullions, allowing for comfortable housing of aircraft as large as the Airbus A380. The hot-dip galvanized steel frame is clad with two-inch-thick THERMOHALL® insulated fabric. Maintenance is very low.
Hangar doors from ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems
Megadoor multi-panel hangar doors provide many advantages for meeting the unique requirements of MRO operations: quick servicing of planes, simplified and dependable operation, controllable and comfortable interior environments, safer operations and traffic flow, and lower energy usage and costs, even in the harshest environments.
According to Pierre Varmaloff, Aviation – Megadoor Sales, “MRO design should not be about housing aircraft, but quickly servicing planes to get them back in the air. Megadoors are all about reliability, saving time and money for facility operators, and increasing customer satisfaction. When workers have an optimal environment, it shows up in their work.”
Designed specifically to handle the demands of large-scale, one-of-a kind operations, like RFD, ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems’ hangar doors provide the following benefits:
• Minimize construction costs – reduce building footprint and volume by eliminating the need for space consuming bottom rolling door pockets and tracks
• Energy efficiency – minimize the energy loss of a hangar door by reducing air infiltration, leakage, heat loss from conduction and mass air flow.
• Aesthetics – give doors a distinguished design with 8 standard color fabric options or a custom graphic design option for a truly custom look
• Safety – safeguard workers and equipment with built-in door sensor systems, flame-resistant door panels, wind-resistant dimensioned beams, and translucent fabric panels that provide natural light.
• Bird abatement – tightly sealed door systems prevent birds entering the hangar
• Reduce life cycle costs - high quality components reduce wear and tear and resist corrosion, which reduces over all maintenance costs
• Create a sustainable, scalable, and comfortable work environment that frees up more interior space for building, repairing, and retrofitting all types of commercial and military vessels.
• Improve worker efficiency by using the natural light provided by translucent, double-layer fabric door panels while minimizing lighting costs
The Project
ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems worked together with Rubb Building Systems on the Chicago Rockford – AAR project. The two companies have historically worked well together on numerous projects. Rubb’s robust frame structure and superior engineering supports even the most enormous Megadoor hangar doors. The quality of Megadoor solutions in combination with Rubb’s superior framing design reduces the building footprint and eve height along with energy recovery efficiency, making Megadoor the most cost-effective hangar door option. This makes the actual cost of door operations the lowest in the market, thereby saving the customer a lot of money in the long run.
