A Green Party London Assembly member (AM) has accused the mayor of London of going back on a campaign promise to block the expansion of Heathrow as he will not pressure the government to suspend the Airports National Policy Statement (ANPS).

In September 2024, under the current Labour government, Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Olney asked whether the government would review the ANPS.

Department for Transport parliamentary under-secretary of state Mike Kane said: “As required by the Planning Act 2008, the secretary of state will review a National Policy Statement when she considers it appropriate to do so.”

Then, in a heated exchange between Green Party AM Zack Polanski and London Mayor Sadiq Khan at a meeting of the London Assembly on 16 January 2025, Polanski repeatedly asked the mayor if he would pressure the government to suspend the ANPS.

Khan reiterated his stance against a third runway at Heathrow but would only say he was discussing the ANPS with the government, not asking it to suspend the ANPS.
