Despite massive investment in existing airport at Findel, continued growth means a new airport will likely be needed by mid-century, says Yuriko Backes

Luxembourg will need a new airport in the long term, Transport Minister Yuriko Backes has said, despite ongoing investment of around €1 billion in the existing facility at Findel over the next decade.

Yuriko Backes, the airport is to be expanded. What will that mean?

Two runways are not possible on the existing site, but we are working on enlarging the terminal, among other things.

This is because we are seeing dynamic growth both on the passenger side and in the cargo sector. The number of passengers is growing continuously. The forecasts we have are that we will have over eight million passengers by 2040.

Today we are at five million. And in freight traffic, we are at 830,000 tonnes, which is also likely to increase further in the long term...
