The London City Airport Development Programme (CADP), designed by architects Pascall+Watson has just been granted planning approval by Chancellor Philip Hammond, Transport Secretary Chris Grayling and the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Sajid Javid.
Pascall+Watson led the development and co-ordination of projects comprising of a series of landmark projects that includes a large scale terminal extension, new multi-storey passenger pier, new baggage system, new aircraft parking stands over water and a new multi-modal transport forecourt, exponentially improving passenger experience and providing sorely needed aviation capacity in London.
The new dockside design will include a 260 bedroom airport hotel, parking, car rental and taxi facilities. The airfield works include a new extended parallel taxi lane that improves runway usage, as well as additional aircraft stands to maximise runway capacity at peak times.
The infrastructure and passenger facilities will ensure the predicted 6.5 million passengers have minimised travel delays, increase their speed through check-in and arrivals and utilise the additional 32,000 flights per year by 2025. The programme, which will open up new destinations to the Gulf and Middle East, Turkey, Russia and the east coast USA, is in keeping the Airport’s prestigious role as a gateway to London and the UK.
The expansion will help to catalyse the regeneration of London’s Royal Docks through upwards of 2,000 additional employment opportunities in Newham and an expected £1.5 billion per year for the national economy.
Pascall+Watson have extensively incorporated green technologies across the scheme including vast tracts of photovoltaic cells, combining cooling heat and power plant benefiting from day time airport use and night time hotel use, as well as dock source heat exchange systems that exploit the natural resource the Airport so uniquely sits above.
