San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has been given FAA approval to use new landing technology, known as Ground-Based Augmentation System (GBAS). The technology corrects inherent errors in GPS accuracy allowing aircraft fitted with compatible systems to land with greater precision.
The FAA has approved the system to replicate existing landing procedures, but with more innovative methods planned, SFO is hopeful the technology will help it reduce noise and increase safety.
GBAS is designed to support aircraft throughout the transition from en-route airspace to precision approach and landing, with a demonstrated accuracy of less than one meter. The FAA says GBAS is the only feasible satellite-based navigation system capability for Category II/III low visibility to touchdown and rollout.
