A global IT outage has caused disruption at East Midlands Airport on what officials said would be its busiest day of the year so far.

About 20,000 passengers were expected to pass through the airport, near Castle Donington, on Friday, with travellers heading off on their summer holidays.

However widespread international IT problems have seen planes grounded at many airports worldwide.

The BBC understands carriers TUI and Ryanair were having to manually check in passengers at East Midlands Airport (EMA) on Friday morning because of issues with computer systems.
