By prioritizing the human element of design, architects can create memorable experiences from the moment passengers enter the terminal

An airport doesn’t have to exist simply as a threshold between point A and point B. It’s a traveler’s first glimpse into a city or a jump-off point to a new journey. A destination in its own right, the airport should be designed in a manner worthy of travelers’ time and attention.

Expectations for airports are shifting, as too is the way we think about airport design. Airport architecture historically prioritized efficiency, aircraft traffic and logistics, but this is no longer enough. It now aims to meld efficiency with spaces that evoke community, curiosity and connection. When thought of in this light, airport designers are curators of experience, designing spaces that reward the journey while still meeting the complex demands of performance and security.

Putting people first

The Tom Bradley International Terminal at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) exemplifies this evolution. Inside, 100,000ft2 (9,290m2) of high-end retail, dining and lounges transform the terminal into a vibrant reflection of the city’s glamour and creative spirit. Travelers encounter Los Angeles through the lens of its airport.
