Gözde Kaygusuz, director of the masterplan, planning and construction department at Germany’s Düsseldorf Airport, reveals how her entrepreneurial approach to industry megatrends is informing the airport’s bold construction plans

Aviation stands at the threshold of a new era. As global megatrends such as urbanization, digitalization and sustainability accelerate, Düsseldorf Airport currently faces the challenge of evolving its role as a high=performance transportation hub in the heart of Europe. Our Masterplan 2045 is the strategic response to these dynamics – a long-term, integrated future roadmap that combines sustainable growth, flexibility and spatial efficiency. Our goal is to position Düsseldorf Airport as a true ‘destination of excellence’.

One of the greatest challenges for airports is planning under highly uncertain conditions. Global crises such as pandemics, geopolitical conflicts and economic volatility increasingly push traditional planning cycles and forecasting models to their upper limits.

What’s more, local challenges intensify the complexity: scarcity of land in urban areas, strict noise protection and environmental regulations, complex approval processes, as well as growing political and societal demands for sustainability. Our task is to create flexible, resilient and modular masterplans that can tolerate adjustments without losing strategic focus...
