Costain awarded Heathrow contract to deliver new baggage project at Terminal 2

Costain, the infrastructure solutions company, has been selected, as part of an alliance, to deliver infrastructure to support a new baggage system at Heathrow Terminal 2.

Costain completed the ECI and design phase of the upgrade of the baggage handling facilities and systems in 2025 and has now been chosen to deliver the construction and build phase of the project. Once complete, the baggage system will enable the efficient handling of 31,000 bags per day.

The three-year contract was awarded to Costain under the H7 Framework Alliance, through which Costain is working with Heathrow and its partners to deliver asset renewals and construction projects to enhance the airport’s operations and customer experience.

Costain will bring its expertise in complex engineering in highly regulated environments, alliance partnerships and supply chain collaboration to build and upgrade the baggage facilities and systems, which will ensure the baggage operations of Terminal 2 are state of the art.

Ann-marie Morrison, sector director, integrated transport at Costain, said: “Costain has a long and successful track record of delivering complex infrastructure projects in live, highly regulated working environments. We are looking forward to working with Heathrow to deliver an improved customer experience in close collaboration with our supply chain partners and airline operators."

“Constructability was at the heart of our design work, and this next phase of the project will deliver new, modern baggage infrastructure for Terminal 2. This will be critical for ensuring long-term resilience in catering for the tens of millions of passengers who travel through the airport each year, as well as supporting a more prosperous UK.”

The award builds on Costain’s growing position in the aviation sector, where it is delivering a range of asset renewal projects and infrastructure services for UK airport operators. Under the H7 Framework, Costain delivered the complex dismantling of Starlight Point, which was completed with no disruption to the airport’s operations and acted as a key enabler for the construction of the new baggage infrastructure in Terminal 2.
