Colombia has launched the bidding process for the first phase of the project to build the Café international airport in Caldas department, an initiative valued at 740bn pesos (US$184mn).
The award of the contract is scheduled to take place on November 14.
The investment covers construction, supervision, administration, management and other components, with the aim of consolidating strategic infrastructure to improve air connectivity in the coffee region, which includes the departments of Caldas, Risaralda and Quindío of western Colombia.
The first phase includes the construction of a runway 1,340m long and 30m wide, aprons for commercial and general aircraft, taxiways and security zones at both ends.
According to the official schedule, the pre-construction stage will last 10 months, followed by 24 months of construction. An additional 12 months has been allocated for monitoring and oversight, according to the timeline presented by Aerocafé, the government body established to organize the project.
The works are expected to be completed in October 2028.
