The Brazilian government announced details of a program to stimulate the offering of concessions for small regional airports, with measures aimed at encouraging the terminals to be taken over by major operators.

The regional airports will be offered through a simplified competitive process following a public consultation held earlier this year.

In the first phase, 19 airports in 11 states in the north and northeast regions will be offered. Projected investments are 1.35bn reais (US$243mn) and bids are expected to be unveiled in September, according to the ministry.

As a way to encourage the participation of large airport operators, the government will offer easier payment terms for concession fees and may also negotiate extensions of existing concessions at major airports.

Separately, Spanish firm Aena announced planned investment of 4.5bn reais in the 11 airports it manages in Brazil.

The investment will be made over the next three years, with most of the resources directed toward expansion works at Congonhas in São Paulo state and Recife in Pernambuco.
