Digital identities and mobile wallets are poised to revolutionize air travel by replacing physical passports and boarding passes, promising faster, seamless airport experiences for passengers worldwide

he use of digital identities for travel is set to transform the aviation sector, with passengers using digital wallets on their phones to pass through check-in, boarding and border control, eliminating the need for physical passports, boarding passes, visas and other documents required to fly. The benefits for airports are extensive, with reduced queues creating extra capacity and improved passenger experiences, which should lead to increased non-aeronautical spending.

The rollout of digital identities and digital wallets is not straightforward, however. Several industry stakeholders, including IATA, ICAO, airports, airlines and government authorities, are working together to find the best – and most interoperable – approach to the use of digital identity for travel. So, what is meant by ‘digital identity’ and how can it be used in the aviation sector?
