Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) has been granted permission to hold discussions with airlines over the opening of 20 new gates. These gates will go online gradually from the early 2030s as part of major expansion works starting in the coming years.
With the airport already struggling at full capacity, the expansion could double Austin-Bergstrom's capacity and bring a host of new routes to local residents. Southwest Airlines has expressed its hopes of becoming the anchor tenant of the airport's new concourse development.
Ghizlane Badawi, CEO at Austin-Bergstrom, said that the total cost of the expansion program will be confirmed and made public by early 2026, with all airlines given a deadline of January 1, 2026, to finalize their agreements.
