On April 28, many flights were delayed or diverted at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). It has been reported that several aircraft were stuck in the surrounding airspace, circling in holding patterns, and many on the ground couldn’t take off on time.
It all started with an issue with the telecommunications and radar equipment at Philadelphia Terminal Radar Approach Control, which handles aircraft movement in and out of Newark Airport. Once that was resolved, staffing issues in Philadelphia added to the situation.
Last year, the Federal Aviation Administration decided to transfer oversight of traffic at Newark Liberty International Airport to the TRACON (Terminal Radar Approach Control) facility at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). This also required 24 ATC personnel to relocate from their Long Island, New York, facility to Philadelphia.
