The Southwest Florida International Airport terminal expansion project has been delayed by design flaws and will now cost nearly $678.4 million.

A redesigned terminal expansion project at Southwest Florida International Airport is ready for takeoff.

Lee County commissioners have approved three contract extensions needed to complete the first phase of an expansion that veered far off course.

At a special meeting Monday, commissioners – sitting as the Lee County Port Authority – gave the trio of contracts a unanimous thumbs up, after more than an hour of presentations, discussions, questions and comments.

The board agreed to extend contracts with Manhattan for construction, with AtkinsRealis for construction administration and engineering oversight services, and with EG Solutions for construction engineering inspection services, giving them a chance to finish what they started.
