The prospect of flying premium passengers direct to airport terminals in clean, quiet electric air taxis has moved a step closer, but significant progress must still be made if it is to become a reality.
In early August, Joby Aviation agreed to acquire the passenger business of urban helicopter service provider Blade Air Mobility. This gives the company a head start operating airport shuttle flights in New York, one of the launch markets for electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing (eVTOL) air taxis under Joby’s 2022 agreement with Delta Air Lines to provide a home-to-airport transportation service.
Blade flew more than 50,000 passengers in 2024 from a network of 12 urban terminals, including dedicated lounge and terminal bases at New York John F. Kennedy International (JFK) and New York Newark Liberty (EWR) airports, as well as Manhattan’s three heliports, which the city is electrifying to accept eVTOL air taxis.
