The Portuguese Government revisited the plan to have a new airport serving Lisbon as the current one - Humberto Delgado - reached its maximum capacity in 2016.
On 8 January 2019 the Government and ANA (Portuguese airports authority owned by Vinci) signed an agreement to convert Montijo Air Force base into a civil airport with a capacity for 50 million passengers / 72 movements per hour, almost twice the capacity of the current Lisbon airport. Total investment of £1bn+ comprises the new airport and upgrade of the current one.
ANA / Vinci currently operate 10 airports in Portugal: Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Beja, 4 in the Azores islands – Ponta Delgada, Santa Maria, Horta, Flores, and 2 in Madeira islands – Madeira and Porto Santo.
