The £1.1bn expansion of London Stansted Airport will prioritise assembly-on-site over construction-on-site to minimise disruption, according to design partners on the project.
The planned expansion to London’s third airport, which is to get underway this year, will increase its annual passenger capacity from currently just below 30M to 43M.
Stilgoe told the event that much of this expansion will be achieved with minimal disruption to current operations by being designed with modular construction in mind.
Stansted’s terminal was originally designed by Foster + Partners and built with a modular approach, using “trees” holding up large square areas of roof. This is something that the new expansion will replicate.
