Airport terminals are notoriously loud, bright and full of echoing announcements. Fabric Architecture was consulted by Grimshaw Architects' to create beautiful baffles that softened the look, feel and acoustics of the spacious Central Artrium area.
Other design considerations had been rejected because of the extra loads they put onto the existing roof.
84 aluminium and fabric panels were designed, engineered and attached to the building's steel sub-frame within safe loading restrictions on the existing roof.
Obstacles such as escalators, scafffolding and galleried walkways had to be overcome during a night time installation allowing other trades to work during the day.
