Athens International Airport (AIA) is reshaping its major capacity expansion program, moving to a phased implementation model designed to deliver additional capacity while limiting disruption to airport operations.
Under the revised approach, AIA will discontinue the existing Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) tender process covering the broader expansion program. The ECI process had involved contractors at an early stage to provide construction and operational input before the main works moved ahead.
AIA will instead launch a separate open construction tender for the first phase of its 40-million-passenger capacity program. This will include the South Main Terminal Pier, the expansion of the Satellite Terminal and works in associated areas, with the aim of delivering additional capacity without delaying the overall development program.
A separate tender for the initial phase of the North Terminal expansion is scheduled for the second half of 2027.
The change does not mean the airport’s expansion program has been cancelled or put on hold. The existing plan to increase capacity to 40 million passengers annually remains AIA’s reference plan, but its implementation will now be more gradual and modular...
