Early career civil engineers visited NCE’s office on Fleet Street last week to take part in an innovation competition held in partnership with Heathrow Airport.

In doing this, Heathrow Airport wants to encourage innovative thinking and fresh ideas from the next generation of engineers across the sector so has invited early career professionals to submit proposals for how it can innovate.

“When I talk to young people we work with some will say to me something like, ‘I’ve just made an app to assess structural movements as an example’,” said Heathrow Airport head of capital Programme management office and one of the judges of the competition Ben Jones.

“I love the fact that they’ve done this on their own initiative and see this type of technology as a natural enabler. We’ve worked with NCE to put this together so we can look at ways of using that drive and inspiration from young people to modernise how we deliver our capital works infrastructure...
