There is a higher potential cyber security threat level for critical national infrastructure as the use and capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) are growing, according to a new GCHQ report.
GCHQ’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has warned that a “digital divide” between organisations able to keep pace with AI-enabled threats and those that cannot is set to heighten the UK’s overall cyber risk. This will make cyber security at scale increasingly more important up to 2027 and in the future beyond that.
The new report, Impact of AI on cyber threat from now to 2027, states AI will also “almost certainly” further reduce time between vulnerabilities being disclosed and being exploited by malicious actors due to its use in speeding up processes.
In a stark warning, the NCSC said: “AI will almost certainly continue to make elements of cyber intrusion operations more effective and efficient, leading to an increase in frequency and intensity of cyber threats.”
