The South Yorkshire mayor has unveiled a £30M investment aimed at reopening Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA), a move given vocal backing by central government.
This initiative is expected to create around 5,000 jobs and enhance the local economy by £5bn, alongside an additional £2bn worth of wider social and economic benefits projected by 2050.
For years, DSA has remained dormant, despite its potential as a catalyst for economic development in the North. Following an Outline Business Case presented by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) Board in February 2024, progress has been made. Notably, the City of Doncaster Council has secured a 125-year lease with Peel Airports, the owner of the airport, and a preliminary procurement process has identified a preferred international airport operator, although details about this operator have yet to be disclosed.
