In a recent project at Auckland International Airport to address HVAC contamination and inefficiency due to the growth of biofilm, UVC emitters were installed in over 100 air-handling units. A return on investment of less than 18 months and total savings of $272,000 with a reduction of 2,480Mwh pa. were achieved. Savings were derived from energy reduction and reduced maintenance.
Removal of biofilm has contributed to improved IAQ. A principal cause of poor IAQ is biofilm contamination within the air handling units and which is resistant to traditional cleaning methods.
