The new terminal for Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) International Airport has been announced as a World Architecture News (WAN) Awards 2018 Transport - Future Project finalist.

The Pascall+Watson design fuses references from local heritage and culture with a contemporary architectural language, creating a sense of place and identity for arriving and departing passengers. The expressive form of the roof and multi-layered facade take inspiration from the geometry, textures and colours of Trichy’s unique traditional temple architecture and the landscape which it sits within.

Climatic constraints, local customs and specific Indian security processes have been considered and are reflected in the aesthetic, planning and structural solutions.

The GRIHA Four Star rated design maximises the use of natural light within the building and incorporates renewable energy measures such as rainwater harvesting, ground source heat pumps and photovoltaic panels.

This year’s winners will be revealed at WAN Award’s annual gala dinner in November.
