Leading supplier of airport baggage solutions, services and IT, Siemens Postal, Parcel & Airport Logistics has successfully reached the final of the prestigious 2016 Airport Operators Association (AOA) Award for Best Service Provider which the company won in 2012 and 2013. The winner of the award will be announced at today‘s annual AOA conference and exhibition, awards dinner and ceremony in London. Nominees in this category have demonstrated how their service has added value to an airport, has responded to an airport’s needs and requirements, and has delivered excellent overall impact on behalf of the airport, its customers and passengers.

Nominated Best Service Provider for delivering a number of projects over the past 12 months at London Gatwick, the company supplied and installed the very latest equipment at the North Terminal this year to enhance functionality of the baggage handling operation, maintain throughput of the baggage system and help deliver a high level of performance and efficiency, benefiting both passengers and airlines.

A further two contracts placed in 2016 also testify to the successful cooperation between Siemens and London Gatwick. Completed in May 2016, the project to upgrade check-in facilities operating at London Gatwick’s South Terminal included the refurbishment of existing baggage handling controls technology and the supply and the replacement of new baggage conveyors and mechanical equipment.

Siemens has successfully demonstrated expertise in this area of the operation as London Gatwick continues to ensure the baggage handling infrastructure keeps pace with the increasing demands from future growth of passengers and baggage in some of the busiest areas of the Terminal.  London Gatwick worked with the team at Siemens to carry out this detailed work ahead of the busy summer season to help plan for further improvements later in the year.

Adam Hill, Programme Manager of Baggage at London Gatwick, said: 'The timely completion of the works by Siemens has enabled London Gatwick to enhance check-in reliability and maintainability with the latest equipment installed throughout the South Terminal Check-in areas. This has improved the overall performance and efficiency of the baggage handling operations, benefiting both passengers and airlines'.

Early in 2016, London Gatwick renewed a service contract with Siemens to provide continued engineering support for the operation of the baggage handling systems at both the South and North Terminals for a further 12 months with an option to extend the contract.

The renewal of the contract ensures maximum uptime of both terminal operations and provides Gatwick with the opportunity for further system enhancements. Flexible on-site engineering support enables Siemens to provide additional or specialised resources to implement minor modifications and enhancements to the control systems to reflect changes in the configuration and layout of the conveyors as a day-by-day activity.

More recently (September, 2016), Siemens has successfully bid for three lots of London Gatwick Airport’s baggage framework contract for the design, controls and integration of baggage handling facilities at the busiest single runway airport in the world.

Commenting on the framework for London Gatwick, Karen Brown – Head of Procurement, said: ‘Congratulations to the team at Siemens. London Gatwick is a world-leader and this new framework agreement will allow Siemens to help ensure this remains the case for many years to come. Gatwick Airport looks forward to continue working closely with Siemens to improve and innovate technology across the airport and to help the airport operate efficiently and smoothly whilst creating a great passenger experience‘.

Siemens has a proven track record with a global pedigree for the efficient installation, operation and maintenance of baggage handling systems with the technical capability to integrate and improve systems and technology. For logistics expertise and operational support, Siemens combines experience with reliability, foresight and innovation’.
