Work to upgrade Santa Lucía Air Force base in Mexico to handle commercial traffic is to start imminently, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) said on 24 April.

Speaking at the opening of the Mexican Aerospace Fair 2019, AMLO claimed the project would save MXN100 billion (USD52.6 million) compared with the greenfield New International Airport for Mexico City (NAICM), which he cancelled shortly after taking office on 1 December 2018.
