Since Beirut’s ‘Rafic Hariri International Airport’ (BEY) exceeded its annual design capacity of 6 million passengers in 2013 already, there were various pre-corona time plans to expand its capacity. By 2019, the number of passengers had reached 8.69 million. An urgent expansion worth USD 18 million that would add capacity by 2 million passengers to reach 8 million was contracted to Engineer Elie Maalouf Company by the Council for Development and Reconstruction (CDR), based on a design by Dar Al Handasah (Shair & Partners). Following this preliminary phase, a project was to be implemented to expand the airport at a cost of USD 500 million to gradually raise its annual capacity to 20 million passengers by 2030 (#1100.7). A new terminal along with gate holdrooms, more check-in and passport control counters, a fast-track lane for First Class passengers and extra aircraft parking aprons would be added and the use of existing buildings would be optimized. Once the study is completed, a detailed design study will follow. The process will take around three years: The modernization study will take a maximum of six months, the design study a year, and a further year for the tender preparation and launch. #1130.17
