The leader of North Hertfordshire council has hit out at the government decision to back expansion plans at Luton Airport, saying that it “flies in the face of public opposition and completely ignores the climate emergency”.

Council leader Elizabeth Dennis said the authority was “deeply disappointed” that Levelling Up secretary Michael Gove backed plans for the airport to expand into the third largest in the UK, with capacity raised from 18M to 19M passengers per year.

The airport is ultimately looking to expand to a capacity of 32M annual passengers by building a new terminal, with the examination process for these plans ongoing.
